Max Neely Johnson, Sr., 70, of Cooter, Mo., died Thursday, September 12, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Blytheville, Ark.
Born June 13, 1932 in Blytheville, he was the son of the late Thomas Neely and Cliffie French Johnson. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Johnson and Gerald Johnson.
A lifelong area resident, he was a retired farmer and a member of the Holly Grove Baptist Church in Cooter. He was a former Sunday School superintendent and church treasurer at Number Nine Baptist Church.
According to family members, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed taking care of his family and being the chief cook at family barbecue gatherings. His hobbies included photography, attending flea markets and antiquing furniture. He lived for his grandchildren and they were the joys of his life in later years. Mr. Johnson leaves his wife, Shirley Thomas Johnson, of Cooter; two sons: Neal Johnson and his wife Melissa of Memphis, Tenn., and Dr. Jospeh T. Johnson and his wife Rosanne of Osceola, Ark.; two daughters: Beth McCutcheon and her husband Jeff of Cooter and Dana Ford and her husband Tommy of Jonesboro, Ark.; six grandchildren: Matthew Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Jake Ford, Olivia Ford, Will Johnson and Jill McCutcheon.
Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 2002, at the Holly Grove Baptist Church in Cooter with Rev. Dave Lewelling officiating.
Burial was at the Number Eight Cemetery near Cooter with Cobb Funeral Home of Blytheville in charge.
Palbearers were his nephews: Billy Johnson, Mark Johnson, Dr. Scott Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Brent Johnson, Tony Johnson, Kevin Hester, Jeremy Thomas, Christ Thomas, Kelly Thomas and Brian Lynn.
